Although heart disease is sometimes thought of as a "man's disease," it is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States, with women comprising 51% of the total heart disease deaths.
The American Heart Association reported in February of 2007, that nearly every American woman is in danger of heart disease or stroke.
Guidelines For Women were proposed by the AHA as an aid for women to help prevent heart disease.
Aspirin: Used for preventing stroke unless a health condition or bleeding risk exists. Consult your pysician.
Exercise: At least 30 minutes every day or up to 90 minutes if you need to lose weight.
Dietary: Eat mostly fruits and vegetables, whole grain and high-fiber foods. Fish at least twice a week and no salt. Cut your sodium level as well. Get down to or below the recommended 1300 mg to 1800 mg a day of sodium. (1300 mg for healthy mostly sedantary people, up to 1800 mg for healthy active people.)
Fat: Limit saturated fat to less than 10 percent of calories. 7 percent if possible and cut trans fats to less than 1 percent. Click on food list at left to find nutrients for most all foods.
Alcohol: No more than one drink a day. If on heart medications, ask your cardiologist or your registered dietitian.
Weight: Keep body mass index under 25.
Supplements: Consider taking Omega-2 salmon oil
if you have heart disease. Do not take extra folic acid or antioxidants like vitamin E (which reportedly can cause heart disease) or vitamin C, or beta carotene for heart prevention. They do not work.
Blood Pressure and Cholesterol: Keep them under control. If you need medications to do this, then take them as prescribed.
was suggested by the AHA as one of the steps to help prevent strokes in women. But a caution flag was also hoisted warning that women shouldnl't just start taking aspirin but instead consult with their doctor. Aspirin can
cause damage to some people while not to others.
